Drug rehabilitation can be defined as a process through which extensive dependence on a single or a variety of addictive substances by a person is treated. Some of these highly addictive drugs include:
Prescription drugs are also a major type of addiction that affects people from around the world, including America.
Even with its very strict rules battling drug trafficking, sales and consumption, the United States of America is one of the world’s leading countries in the use of illegal drugs.
With virtually all states in the country having issues with out-of-hand addictions that affect all groups of people, from young to old as well as the rich and the poor, the importance of drug rehab clinics cannot be understated.
In 2001, a study conducted by a governing body mandated with looking at the levels of drug addiction in the United States concluded that the number was increasing annually. In that year for instance, almost 16 million Americans starting at the age of twelve said they had taken an illegal drug within the month the research was undertaken. In comparison to the results of the previous year, this represented an increase of 0.8 percent.
By 2006, almost 21 million Americans of the same age were hooked to illegal drugs, with 2.4 million using cocaine.
Far-reaching reliance on drugs had often been described by treatment professionals as a disease that affects the brains of the victims, which is what makes it very hard for them to come to terms with the pending destruction that could be caused by the drug they take.
Because of this phenomenon, many of them often fail to get the necessary medical help in time and end up suffering injuriously as a consequence, even hurting their immediate family members and friends. In 2001, this number was estimated to be almost 5 million addicts; a number that addiction specialists say is increasing every year.
Drug rehab clinics are designed to help the addicts of these drugs understand the harm that they are placing themselves in by engaging in their use and help them chart a way forward towards a complete recovery. They provide addicts with relaxing environments where they will receive treatment for their addiction. In the most extreme cases, patients will be required to live within the treatment centers until they become sober enough to return to their homes.
Many drug rehab clinics in the country have well-trained and experienced drug counselors and psychotherapists who will look into the drug abuse problems being faced by their clients and come up with a plan that will direct the healing process. There are centers that are specific for needs of the physically and mentally challenged, the old, and the very young as well as teenagers who are battling with an addiction to drugs.
However, despite there being literally thousands of drug rehab clinics scattered across the country, they are not enough to deal with the ever-growing number of addicts. Millions of addicts every year miss places in rehabilitation centers for their conditions across all the country. Many more will be needed to handle the growing number of addicts requiring treatment.
